EXERCISE: Past tenses

Jane is a bit nervous. She’s looking for something and seems to be in a hurry.
John – What’s the matter, Jane. You look so worried.
Jane – Yes, I am. Look! (She points at a stain on her sleeve.)
John – What [do] you?
Jane – Well, I [be] in the kitchen.
I [want] to pick up the teapot but it [be] so hot that I almost [drop] it. That’s where this stain is from.
John – Oh but don’t worry. You can go and change. We still have time.
Jane – Are you sure? I [see just] Nick arriving and the others will soon be here as well.
John – Oh, but the manager [not come] yet. He [phone] a moment ago to tell me he would be late.
Jane – Oh good. I’m going then. I’ll be back as soon as I can.
One hour later, Jane comes back all wet and the meeting is over.
John – Eh! Where [be] you?
Jane – Don’t ask! It would take too long to explain. [notice] they I wasn’t there?
John – Well…
